To achieve some of the most iconic scenes in fantasy movie history, the special effects crew on the Lord of the Rings series built a wide range miniature sets that were detailed and shot so well, it was almost impossible to believe what was a physical set and what was added as CGI later in post production. The combination of minature and 'bigiature' sets allowed for actors to be placed seamlessly within the tiny, highly detailed sets. Check out the gallery below for some mind-blowing special effects work!
With the upcoming sequel due to land in June, after a LONG 20-year break, we're incredibly excited to see Independence Day: Resurgence. A lot of the existing cast are returning and the story leads on straight from the previous movie, albeit some years later. Many remember the original Independence Day for its ground-breaking special effects but many also don't realise that the original used a lot of practical special effects, props and miniatures to create the exciting action scenes. It definitely was NOT an over-the-top CGI experience we've come to know from recent blockbuster movies. Check out the behind the scenes photos we've managed to find showing the incredible work put into those memorable scenes. There's also a special treat right at the bottom :) Click the image or read more to see 'em.
